How to Check a Phone’s IMEI in Kenya

The IMEI is a 15-digit number unique to each phone. Checking it confirms the make and model registered to that number, which helps you spot counterfeit or mislabelled phones.

  1. Find the IMEI. Dial *#06#. Dual-SIM phones show two IMEIs; either works. It is also printed on the box.
  2. SMS it to 1555. Send the IMEI digits to 1555. The service is run by the Communications Authority of Kenya and is free.
  3. Read the reply. You receive the make and model registered to that IMEI. If it does not match the phone in your hand, do not buy it.

Check the box too

The IMEI on the box should match the one on the phone.
